The Champagne region has been the site of many battles, the war of 14-18 being no exception. The Château de la Marquetterie played its part in the fighting. An area maintained primarily by General de Castelnau and Marshal Joffre, it was here that the Autumn 1915 offensive was launched. A young cavalry officer, Pierre Taittinger took on the role of liaison for the military staff. Having fallen in love with the place, he vowed to return, and did so after the war. Along with his brother-in-law, Paul Evêque, he purchased the Marquetterie estate in 1932.
Thus the Taittinger adventure in Champagne began.
