On his journey back from Constantinople Thibaud IV passed through Cyprus. It was there that he tasted a wine that charmed him — the grapes from which he decided to bring back to his lands in Champagne. Back in his fief, the species he brought back from Limassol were planted on the chalky lands of his estates in Epernay and Sézanne.
